|
Five-term
former Mayor of Houston, Louie Welch passed away Sunday at?age
of 89. His son said he had been diagnosed with untreatable lung
cancer.
Welch was elected as Houston’s mayor for the first time in 1963.
In his five-term tenure, he led the initiatives to obtain
Houston’s water supply from Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston,
started a campaign to clean up the Houston ship channel and
fostered programs for bayou beautification and development of
the downtown civic center.
His good friend and former Mayor Bob Lanier said, "Welch was a
good and decent man who loved public service and fought hard to
make people's lives better."
We all will remember Louie Welch as Mayor White said: “He helped
to shape life in Houston in some very special ways.”
