This is Our Duty to Vote |
|
|
|
|
In a strong
turnout, voters in Texas and Ohio went to the voting booths on
Tuesday. One of the strongest supporters of Hillary Clinton,
former Washington
state governor, Gary Locke, came to Houston at the International
Trade Center
to meet with Asian community leaders. Democratic party leaders
believe the
Asian vote is very important to the primary election outcome.
Locke was the first Asian American governor of Washington from
1997 to 2005
and because of his leadership, the state became one of the most
widely admired
states in America because of its successful innovative education
and welfare
programs.
Governor Locke is third-generation Chinese, an immigrant's son,
and came from
a very poor family in Seattle, Washington. His parents gave him
the Chinese
name of Lok Ga-fai; his middle name, "Faye," comes from the
Americanized
spelling of his Chinese name. Locke attended Yale University and
the Boston
University School of Law. He was elected to the state of
Washington’s House
of Representatives in 1982. In 1993, he made history by becoming
the first
Chinese American to be elected King County's County Executive.
In 1996,
he won the primary and general elections for governor and became
the first
major Chinese head of government in North America. He won
reelection easily
in year 2000 and served until 2005.
Locke came to our office and gave a very warm talk to Asian
leaders from our
community. He stressed that to vote is our duty and right as
well as our responsibility
to our history as immigrants to be part of the U.S. political
process." |
