Historic Chat Opens the Door |

After a
deep-freeze relationship between China and Taiwan for the last
eight years, Taiwanese vice president-elect Vincent Siew and
Chinese President Hu Jin-tao both attended a business conference
on the Chinese tropical island of Hainan. The two leaders met
and had a 20-minute? chat. Though the talk was brief and focused
on mainly on economics, still it was historical.
The Chinese government openly praised the breakthrough that the
meeting represented saying that the direct contact could boost
the rival neighbor's strained relations. Taiwanese
president-elect Ma Ying-jeou called the meeting a good start
toward improving ties, but said that it had "melted only a small
chunk of the iceberg." Ma, whose KMT party is formally committed
to unification, has said he wants to sign a peace treaty with
China, but says he will not discuss unification with the
mainland during his presidency.
We are very glad to see that both sides can sit down and start
to "talk".
