DeBakey Receives Congressional
Gold Medal |
|
|
|
|
After Houston's Dr.
Michael DeBakey received the coveted Congressional Gold medal in
Washington D.C., the Department of Veteran Affairs gave him an
honor it has bestowed
only on two distinguished veterans: a room named for him at the
agency's headquarters.
Veteran Affairs Secretary James Peake said that he had been
trained as an army surgeon
in San Antonio and had "made the pilgrimage to Houston" to see
Dr. DeBakey in action.
DeBakey, 99, praised the service of American’s veterans and
pledged to do every thing he
could to assure them top-rate medical care. He said, "Anyone
who's willing to sacrifice his
life for their country deserves not only our highest esteem, but
whatever is necessary to support him."
Congressman Al Green sponsored the bill in Congress to honor Dr.
DeBakey.
