Myanmar Needs Outside World's Help

Tropical Cyclone Nargis with wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour swept though Myanmar
and government officials there now say the death toll could reach10.000.

Nargis hit the southeast Asian country, also known as Burma, early Saturday with initial winds
of up to 120 mph. The cyclone blew roofs off hospitals and schools and cut off electricity in the country’s largest city, Yangon.

Government radio broadcasting reports from the capital said more than 10,000 people were already confirmed dead. The situation in the countryside remained unclear because of poor communication and roads that were left impassable by the storm.

Older citizens said they had never seen Burma so devastated in their lifetime. With the city without electricity, citizens were lining up to buy candles, which were available, but at twice
the normal price.

The United Nations and neighboring country, Thailand, announced that they will fly much needed
aid to Myanmar starting Monday.

Considered to be the poorest nation in Asia, Myanmar is currently under military rule. We need to extend our help whenever we can to those people who are suffering in their lives.
