WE All Extend Our Helping Hand

Rescue workers tried to find survivors of the worst earthquake to strike China in over 32 years, as schools, factories and hospitals were reduced to rubble.

The Chinese government reported that more than 12,000 people are dead in the worst hit province of southwestern Sichuan, but rescue teams continue to struggle to reach towns cut
off by smashed roads and landslides.

In the town nearby the epicenter, 80 percent of the buildings collapsed, 3000-5000 people had died and 10,000 had been injured. This means that 10 percent of Beichaun, with a population of 161,000 have been killed or injured.

The magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck at Monday 2.28 PM. Tremors from the quake rocked buildings in Beijing and even sent ripples of fear through Bangkok and Hanoi.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao flew to the earthquake zone almost immediately. He told the rescue teams that, "We must make every sacrifice to open the roads; our first priority is to race
to save people. Every minute, every second that you gain is a chance to save one more trapped person."

Leaders all over the world are expressing their condolences to the Chinese government. Overseas Chinese also have started to collect donations to help their countrymen.

We urge all the people to extend their helping hands to help the victims of this earthquake.
