Remembering the King of
Rock and Roll |
|
|
|
|
Today
is the birthday of Elvis Aaron Presley. The rock 'n’ roll legend
died 30 years ago today at the age of 42 at his home, Graceland,
in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis was the recognized “King of Rock
‘n’ Roll” because he introduced that kind of exciting music to
the world. It was his mixing of upbeat southern black songs and
free-style southern white country music that made him world
famous. Elvis soon represented an era of young people who copied
his music, his clothes, his hairstyles, his mannerisms, bought
all his recordings and attended all his movies by the millions.
Last night, Elvis's impersonator Mark Omdahl and many faithful
followers held a candlelight vigil outside the front gates of
his Graceland mansion to commemorate “the king.“
Tours of the Graceland mansion now include a short bus ride up a
hilly pathway that leads to the front door of the house. Tape
recordings of the mansion tour are made available to all
visitors to Graceland in every language in the world—clear
testimony that Elvis was a household name all over the globe.
While Elvis was world-reknown for his rock ‘n’ roll music, he
also recorded many religious and faith-based recordings. One of
the songs Presley enjoyed singing was "Walk a Mile in My Shoes."
Like so many other of his great recordings, this song touched
the hearts of millions.
We will all remember him as the king of music. |
