President-elect
Barack Obama nominated retired General Eric Shinseki to serve as
the 7th United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Steven
Chu, Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as
his Energy Secretary.
Former Washington State Governor Gary Locke and former
Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta congratulated
President-Elect Obama on his choices. "We applaud
President-Elect Obama for his choices of General Shinseki and
Steven Chu to his cabinet. These men are
true leaders in their fields and are well-respected in the
Asian-American and Pacific Islander community."
General Shinseki is the first Asian-American to become a
four-star general in the U.S. Army and first to serve as Army
Chief of Staff. He was a West Point graduate, served in the
Vietnam war and twice was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he
received in Vietnam.
Steven Chu, nominated for U.S. Secretary of Energy, is a
co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 for development
of the methods of cooling and trapping atoms with laser light.
If confirmed, Chu will be the first Chinese-American ever to
hold this office.
As Gary Locke said, "Chu has been an early advocate for
scientific solutions to climate change. He is the right choice
for this post."
We are very confident that Obama's nominations will bring
positive change for his administration. |
