Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Arrested For Protecting Voting Rights
Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee became the third member of the Congressional Black Caucus to be arrested for civil disobedience to draw attention to the voting right issue in the U.S. Congress.
Representative Jackson Lee was joined by black female voting rights advocates from the National Council of Negro Women and the League of Women Voters.
The protesters gathered outside of the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill before proceeding over to the Hart Senate Office Building.
Representative Lee said, “The reason why we are out here is to be able to say to you that no one should dismiss civil disobedience as a valid and important aspect of our strength and our power.”
Jackson Lee is a long time strong supporter of our Asian community. She has always spoken out against the unfair treatment towards our community.
We really appreciate what she is doing in DC. Her action represents the views of many of us on the voting rights issue.
Today Texas Democrats continue to fight for voting rights in Washington as Republicans push for them to return to Texas.
The voting rights bill is such an important move for all of us, especially for the many
newcomers to the U.S. and immigrants.
