Cameron Road, Kowloon: Still Bustling After All These Years
After nearly eight years away, I found myself walking along Cameron Road in Kowloon again this afternoon. The street was as busy as ever, filled with traffic and pedestrians. Familiar sights brought old memories gently back to life.
When I stepped into the tailor shop, the Indian owner welcomed me in Cantonese, just as he had years before. His familiar voice carried the warmth that makes Hong Kong so memorable. In that simple greeting, eight years suddenly seemed a little shorter.
A tailored suit holds more than measurements. In its stitches are traces of time and memories of the people we have met. Over the years, we had each carried on with our lives in different corners of the world. To meet again and ask how the other had been was a quiet pleasure.
Part of Hong Kong’s charm lives in shops like this one. People from different backgrounds settle here, earn their living through their craft, and speak a shared language. Gradually, a foreign city becomes home. As someone who has spent much of his life overseas, I understand that feeling deeply.
Outside, the traffic and crowds continued their hurried journey along Cameron Road. I slowed my pace and took another look at the street I had missed for so long. Amid all the changes in the world, there is comfort in finding a familiar face and hearing a warm greeting.
Returning to Kowloon after eight years, it was this enduring human warmth that touched me most.
