U.S. Department Of Justice To Review Uvalde Shooting

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Sunday that it will conduct a review of the law enforcement response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

DOJ spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement that,
At the request of Mayor Don McLaughlin, the Justice Department will conduct a critical incident review of the law enforcement response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, on may 24.
The Justice Department has traditionally relied on individuals outside of the Department with experience with mass-casualty events to review such incidents.

Previously, the Department has conducted critical incident reviews of the mass shootings in San Bernardino, California, and Orlando, Florida, in June of 2016.

Texas Governor Gregg Abbott said that he is demanding a full accounting of what happened during the school shooting. His expectation is that the law enforcement leaders will be leading the investigation.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden also visited a makeshift memorial in Uvalde to the 21 victims that was built outside the Robb Elementary School. The President and Mrs. Biden also met with family members of the young victims and first responders during their visit to Texas.

Meanwhile,  Attorney General Merrick Garland addressed Harvard University’s commencement ceremony on Sunday saying, As we gather here today to celebrate this milestone in your life, we are also holding on to an enormous amount of grief because of yet another mass shooting at another school in our country. An unspeakable act of violence has devastated families and an entire community in Uvalde, Texas. I know I speak for all of us here that our hearts are broken.

We very much hope that the federal government will launch an investigation as soon as possible on this terrible tragedy. We must find the reasons for the delayed police action during the attack on the school and its students and teachers. So far, we don’t have a clear explanation. Parents of the students across the nation are very frightened.

We expect that the federal and local governments will form a committee to comprehensively review the measures for campus safety, including the training of all teachers in how to respond in times of emergencies as well as the enhancement of campus security with more security cameras and police patrols.

This tragedy has now really become a national crisis and it is very important that we all pay more attention to it.
