Tesla Is Laying Off Its Workforce
Tesla is in the midst of a workforce reduction. The world-dominating electric car manufacturer recently announced a global layoff of one-tenth of its workforce.
According to latest reports, Tesla currently has 140,000 employees,
but its sales dropped by 9% in the
first quarter of 2024 from 423,000 vehicles sold in the same period time last year to 386,000 vehicles sold this year.
Some senior executives at Tesla are also resigning signaling the beginning of a global battle for new leadership of the electric car industry. The main reason is that China's electric cars have been increasingly entering global markets and posing a direct threat to EV sales in Western Europe and U.S. markets.
Both President Biden and Trump have vehemently stated that they will not allow Chinese-made electric cars to enter the U.S. market. Within this context, imposing high tariffs and preventing imports may be a way
to temporarily cope with the situation, but the feasibility of such measures for the long-term remains to be proven over time and actual circumstances.
