UK Prime Minister Set to Visit Mainland China
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is beginning an official visit to mainland China from January 28 to 31, in what will be the first trip to China by a British prime minister in about eight years, as London seeks to stabilize and recalibrate ties with Beijing.
According to announcements from both governments, Starmer is visiting at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and is expected to meet President Xi Jinping, hold talks with Premier Li, and also meet Zhao Leji, China’s top legislator. The itinerary also includes Shanghai, highlighting the trip’s economic focus.
Downing Street has framed the visit as part of a “consistent, pragmatic” approach designed to support UK jobs and business while maintaining safeguards. Reports indicate Starmer is traveling with a sizeable delegation that includes business leaders, underlining efforts to expand trade and investment cooperation in areas such as green growth, technology, and other commercial sectors.
The trip comes amid persistent tensions over national security and human rights, with UK officials signaling they intend to remain “clear-eyed” on security risks even as they pursue economic engagement. Media reporting also suggests sensitive issues—such as political freedoms and high-profile detention cases—could be raised alongside commercial discussions.
