How Should Chinese Americans Navigate a Changing Political Landscape?

By Wea H. Lee

For Chinese Americans who have built their lives in this country, changes in domestic politics affect our families, businesses, and children’s futures. We care about safe neighborhoods, good schools, economic opportunity, and fair treatment. These concerns connect us with people across America.

Amid competing political voices, we need to remain calm and thoughtful. Democracy allows different viewpoints. But when debate becomes a contest of labels and anger, trust begins to disappear. A strong community makes room for disagreement while preserving mutual respect.

The Chinese American community has never spoken with only one voice. Different generations and life experiences naturally produce different perspectives. We should not expect everyone to make the same political choices, nor allow partisan differences to damage relationships among family and friends. Sometimes, listening matters more than persuading.

Reliable information is essential. A social media post or short video may leave out important context. When we encounter claims about immigration, education, public safety, or the economy, we should first ask: Is this someone’s opinion, a policy proposal, or a measure already in effect? Taking a moment to verify information can prevent unnecessary fear and confusion.

Politics also extends far beyond Washington. Schools, roads, public safety, and neighborhood services are shaped by local decisions. Learning how local government works, attending public meetings, and supporting community organizations give residents opportunities to express concerns and understand one another. Everyday cooperation builds trust among people from different backgrounds.

When discrimination or unfair treatment occurs, we should speak clearly and seek fairness through facts and reason. We should also care about the experiences of other communities. Equal treatment becomes a lasting public value when we defend it for everyone.

Our younger generation deserves encouragement to understand both its cultural heritage and the society in which it lives. We can share our experience while giving young people room to ask questions, think independently, and make their own choices.

Looking back on our years of building businesses, publishing newspapers, and serving the community, I believe our most valuable achievement has been the trust we have developed with others. Political circumstances change. Honesty, responsibility, and concern for our neighbors remain values we can practice every day.

As we navigate an uncertain political landscape, let us remain clearheaded and generous in spirit. Let us care for our own future while contributing to the well-being of the society we share. We owe that commitment to our children—and to the home we have worked so hard to build.
