   痛失英才 華裔教授遇害

仼教於美國匹茲堡大學的華裔教授劉斌(譯音Liu Bing )上週末在其寓所被其友人Hao Gu 槍殺，警方對謀殺案之動機正在調查中，這位現年三十七歲的華裔教授目前正做有關新冠病毒之研究，並已取得非常卓越之成就，他也是匹茲堡大學巴哈試驗室之主持人。

消息傳來，科技界及友人感到無比之悲痛，我們更對這位英年早逝的年青科學家感到極度之惋惜。

近數十年來，來自海峽兩岸的華人年輕學子不斷來到美國，據統計，目前在美國留學的華人学生為數超過了四十萬，其中泰半是來自頂尖大學之學生，他們不但品學兼優，而且也是在財政上支持各大學之主力，他們學成之後，多半留在美國貢獻所長，也成了美國人，他們的優越貢獻让大家有目共睹，這也更印證前總統里根所言：“我們是移民國家，移民是我們建立美國最主要之力量。”

劉教授被其友人加害，原因尚未明朗，同為華裔同胞，豈有何深仇大恨下此毒手，奪走一位傑出科學家之性命，令人不解。

值此新冠疫情仍然無法抑止之時，全世界生物科技界正在做分秒必爭之努力，我們不幸少了一位硏究病毒的優秀科學家，真令人遺憾，當我們在為劉教授之去世哀傷之餘，也寄望大家能在此艱難時刻，守望相助，相互關懷，來共度難關。

Loss Of Talented Chinese-American Professor

Bing Liu, a 37-year old research professor at Pittsburg University was found dead in his home on May 2. He had been shot in the head and the neck. Police said one hour later after Liu’s body was discovered, a second person, Hao Gu, 46, was found dead inside a car less than one mile away. Police believe Gu killed Liu before returning to his car where he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pittsburg University issued a statement saying that Liu Bing was on the verge of making a very significant finding toward understanding the cellular mechanism that underlie the Sars Cov 2 infection and the cellular basis of following complications.

We are so sad to learn about this very sad news and our condolences go out to his family.

In the last half century, many Chinese students came to the United States to pursue a better life and higher education. After they got their Master’s or PhD degrees, most of them stayed here and became U.S. citizens and made great contributions to our nation. As the late President Ronald Reagan said, “We are a nation of immigrants.” 

While the coronavirus is still attacking our nation, we have lost one of the most outstanding medical scientist. We still don’t know what is the motive of this killing, but we all feel so sad about this tragedy. This murder case also tells us that hate can’t be the solution.
