A Letter to My Brother
Dear Dan -
This past weekend, I attended the joyous wedding banquet of Sarah with my wife, our elder sisters and their husbands, our younger sister and her husband, and the extended families of the Lee, Shu, and Huang households. Amid the festive atmosphere and heartfelt laughter, I couldn’t help but feel a deep surge of reflection. In the quiet moments between toasts and blessings, my thoughts drifted back to our youth—when our family emerged, step by step, from the shadows of war and upheaval. Those difficult years remain still vividly etched in my memory, as if they happened only yesterday.
That we were able to walk out of those turbulent times and into the stability and success we know today is due to one person above all: our mother. It was her unwavering determination and far-seeing wisdom that changed the course of our family’s destiny. With unwavering strength wrapped within her gentleness, she guided us through many hardships, holding the flame of hope even in the darkest of nights. Her resilience and love became the foundation upon which we built everything that followed to this day.
Over the past forty years, through your tireless work and the dedication of our family, we have built what has become the largest Asian-American media publishing group in the United States. This accomplishment is something to be very proud of. But what moves me even more deeply is the impact our media has had on the society around us.
Our newspapers and broadcasts have served as meaningful bridges for countless new immigrants, helping them understand their new home and to integrate into the broader society. Our reporting has not only chronicled the growth and transformation of Asian-American communities—it has given us a voice. Whether speaking on issues of race, elections, education, or cultural identity, our media has stood on the front lines of truth and justice, advocating for dignity, fairness, and inclusion.
This is not just a business—it is a calling. A mission. A legacy. One that tells the next generation: we were here, we made a difference, and we left behind light.
As I look back, I understand more than ever that every honor we’ve earned, every light we’ve shined, is the result of your perseverance, your quiet strength, and the collective sacrifices of our family. And above all, our success is a living testament to the courageous decision our mother once made—to leave the old world behind and build something new.
May we continue to honor her legacy, always stay true to our purpose, and may our efforts in the media not only document the world around us—but more especially, connect hearts, and illuminate minds.
With deep respect and gratitude,
Your Brother
