Daniel Wong Sues Fort Bend County Attorney Over Authority as Interim County Judge
FORT BEND COUNTY, TEXAS — Interim Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong has filed a lawsuit against County Attorney Bridgette Smith-Lawson, asking the court to confirm that he remains the lawful Interim County Judge and to prevent any actions that interfere with his ability to carry out the duties of the office.
Wong argues that he was legally appointed by the court and, under the Texas Constitution’s holdover provision, he is entitled to continue serving until a lawful successor is appointed or elected. He contends that his authority cannot be terminated unilaterally by the County Attorney.
The dispute arose after the County Attorney asserted that the legal basis for Wong’s appointment had ended when the underlying court case was dismissed. Based on that position, county officials reportedly moved to revoke Wong’s office access, computer privileges, and other administrative authority.
In response, Wong filed suit seeking a judicial declaration that his appointment remains valid and requesting an injunction to prevent any interference with his official responsibilities while the matter is resolved.
The case has attracted significant attention across Fort Bend County, as the court’s ruling is expected to clarify the scope of the Interim County Judge’s authority and could have important implications for the county’s government and future leadership.
