The Historic Significance of Establishing the Southern News Youth Corps By Wea H. Lee
After many years in publishing and community service, I have come to understand that the future of an institution depends on more than buildings, equipment, or financial resources. It depends on young people who are willing to accept responsibility and carry its mission forward with ideas and aspirations of their own.
Establishing the Southern News Youth Corps reflects our faith in the next generation and marks an important step toward the future of Southern News Group.
When we began publishing, we sought to build a life in a new country while helping others do the same. Our newspaper documented immigrant experiences, shared essential information, and connected families to their community. Today’s young people are growing up at the intersection of cultures and digital technology. Their world offers extraordinary opportunities, but it also challenges them to distinguish truth from misinformation and find their own sense of identity and purpose.
We have a responsibility to open doors for them.
The first historic significance of the Youth Corps lies in connecting generations. Through interviews, writing, photography, and community service, young people can discover the stories of those who came before them—the families who worked quietly, endured hardship, and helped build the community we know today. When young people understand these sacrifices, history becomes something personal: a legacy they can carry forward.
Equally important is developing a commitment to truth and public responsibility. In an age when artificial intelligence can produce words and images within seconds, fact-checking, independent thinking, and respect for different perspectives remain essential. Journalism gives young people an opportunity to understand others, bring attention to overlooked concerns, and help unheard voices reach a wider audience.
We also envision the Youth Corps as a bridge among cultures. Beginning in the Chinese American community and reaching across Houston, its members can learn through shared reporting, cultural exchanges, and volunteer service. Working alongside people from different backgrounds will help them build friendships, practice cooperation, and develop leadership through service.
For me, the most meaningful moments will be simple ones: a young person holding a microphone for the first time and finding the courage to ask a question; a student carefully checking every name in a first news story; a volunteer discovering that a small act of kindness can change someone else’s day. These beginnings may shape an entire life.
By establishing the Southern News Youth Corps, we hope to turn decades of experience and community relationships into opportunities for a new generation. Young people deserve a meaningful role in writing the next chapter—and the freedom to contribute their own voices.
May the seeds we plant today grow into a generation grounded in its heritage, guided by purpose, and willing to serve. That is the lasting historic significance of the Southern News Youth Corps.
