Eight Days Until America’s Midterm Elections By Wea H. Lee
With just eight days remaining until America’s midterm elections, we must pause amid the campaign noise and consider a fundamental question: What kind of future do we want our votes to help create?
For ordinary families, politics ultimately comes down to daily life. Can we afford our groceries? Are our jobs secure? Can our children attend school safely? Are our neighborhoods safe? Will care be available when we grow old or become ill? These are the questions that should guide our evaluation of candidates.
An election allows us to express different views, but our society must preserve mutual respect. We may support different parties and strongly criticize policies. Yet we must never allow hatred to replace debate, rumors to shape our judgment, or political disagreements to turn neighbors into enemies.
Through my years in journalism and community service, I have learned that public policy is never far removed from our lives. From business operations to family well-being, from educational opportunities to city development, government decisions can shape the prospects of our generation and the next.
Before voting, let us examine policies carefully and resist appeals to anger and fear. Let us study candidates’ records and look beyond their slogans. Those seeking public office should explain how they intend to solve problems, accept responsibility, and fulfill their promises.
We deserve a government capable of addressing real challenges and an America that welcomes different voices. Every election produces winners and losers, but after the ballots are counted, we must continue living and building this country together.
Eight days remain. Let reason guide our judgment and responsibility guide our choices. Let us cherish our right to vote—and the dignity that democracy gives every citizen.
