(reutersconnect.com)

Speaking in New York on September 23, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the relationship between the world’s two largest economies would help define the twenty-first century. Despite serious disagreements, he argued, avoiding engagement at the highest level would be irresponsible. (reutersconnect.com)

His remarks offer a timely reminder: the more complicated international relations become, the more essential communication is. Engagement does not mean abandoning principles, and dialogue does not erase differences. Keeping channels open allows both countries to clarify their positions, reduce miscalculation, and create room for solutions.

U.S.–China relations reach far beyond diplomacy and military affairs. They affect business orders, farmers’ livelihoods, students’ futures, and millions of families. Ordinary people want the stability to work, study, and plan their lives with confidence.

Here in Houston, an international city, we understand the value of trade and personal connections. From agricultural commerce to educational cooperation, meaningful exchanges can build trust and reveal the hopes that people in both countries share.

Two great powers will never agree on every issue. But they must have the wisdom to manage their differences and the courage to accept their responsibility for peace. Sustained dialogue and practical cooperation are essential commitments to their people—and to the next generation.
