Senate Passes Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill
With a vote of 94-1 the Senate passed with a wide bipartisan majority yesterday a bill denouncing discrimination against Asian communities in the United States.
The bill would also direct the Department of Justice to issue guidance raising awareness of hate crimes during the pandemic and will establish an online reporting system.
The bill was sponsored by New York Democratic representative Grace Meng and Hawaii Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono following the March 16th shooting of six Asian women in Atlanta.
After the bill passed, Senator Hirono said that this bill sends a clear and unmistakable message of solidarity to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
Connie Chung, former CBS correspondent, told CNN that the increase in hate crimes was created by former President Trump calling the COVID-19 virus the “China Virus.”
We are really happy that Congress finally acted on the hate crime legislation. We also want to remind our community leaders to be united to speak out about our problem.
It is very sad that when many of our brothers and sisters are still fighting the pandemic that they also need to fight with the hate crimes.
We urge President Biden to speed up and sign the bill so that all the law enforcement agencies will pay more attention to it.
